ABOUT THIS EVENT
In Lara’s book The Essential Guide to Trauma Sensitive Yoga, she shares a key component to becoming a skilled trauma-informed yoga teacher is to do our own internal work and self- awareness. “It includes recognizing our identities, privileges, assumptions, and how we are perceived by others. It means extending this identity to gain a greater understanding of others” p.51. I recognize my identity as a person with non-visible, invisible disabilities or hidden disabilities, it’s what drew me into trauma-informed practices. As someone with an invisible disability and a senior trauma-informed yoga teacher with THAY I need to show up authentically in my class space with my students and be in practice alongside others with their invisible disability. This has been the impetus for this workshop. For the purposes of this workshop I will be referencing my community using the term invisible disabilities of which myself and those I share personal stories of also identify. Join me as teachers who identify with and or are in allyship, educated with a broader understanding of invisible disabilities and empowered with the knowledge of what a trauma-informed yoga practice can be as we make our class space more inclusive.
IN THIS WORKSHOP WE WILL DISCUSS:
- What is an invisible disability and the history of it in the United States of America.
- The impact in the workplace when employers are not aware of invisible disabilities and the impact on mental health.
- Learn about three different invisible disabilities and what specific needs they would have for a yoga class.
- Share our own identities, privileges and assumptions about invisible disabilities.
- Align this information with THAY trauma-informed practices using Lara’s key points and input from THAY Grads!
- How to advocate for Invisible Disability
